Sheetrev vs ProfitWell

Two ways to read your Stripe metrics. ProfitWell (now owned by Paddle) offers free metrics with paid retention add-ons. Sheetrev drops the same numbers straight into the Google Sheet you already use, for €19/mo. Honest comparison.

Pick ProfitWell if you want zero-cost metrics and you are comfortable being inside the Paddle ecosystem (ProfitWell was acquired by Paddle in 2022). Pick Sheetrev if you would rather pay €19/mo for actual data ownership, full editability, and zero pressure to migrate billing to Paddle.

Where ProfitWell wins

ProfitWell's metrics dashboard is free, which is genuinely hard to beat on price. They invested heavily in visualisation polish before the Paddle acquisition. Their Retain product (paid, separate) actively retries failed charges with smart dunning logic, which is more than Sheetrev's "surface the failed charges, you email the customer" approach.

If your only need is "I want to know my MRR for free, I do not care about owning the data", ProfitWell is a reasonable choice.

Where Sheetrev wins

Three meaningful gaps:

1. Data ownership

ProfitWell hosts your Stripe data on their (now Paddle's) infrastructure. Sheetrev runs the sync inside your own Google account using a read-only Stripe restricted key. Your numbers land as cells in a Sheet you control. We never see your Stripe data and we never store it.

This matters if you have ever wondered what would happen to your numbers if Paddle changed strategy, raised prices on the metrics product, or sunset it. Sheetrev cannot take your data away from you because we never had it.

2. No billing-migration pressure

Paddle is a Merchant of Record. Their primary business is taking over your billing. ProfitWell is an excellent funnel into that conversation. Sheetrev is not in the billing business and never will be. We only read from Stripe. We make money on the metrics product, not on cross-selling you a different payment processor.

3. Editability

Every number in Sheetrev is a real Google Sheet cell. You can pivot it, filter it, run QUERY on it, and wire it into your forecasting model in the same workbook. ProfitWell, like every hosted dashboard, ships polished charts you cannot edit.

The honest take: if cost is your only criterion, ProfitWell free wins. If data ownership, editability, and independence from a billing-tool acquirer matter, €19-49/mo is a fair price for what you get.

Choose Sheetrev if…

You should pick Sheetrev when

  • You already live in Google Sheets and want the data there
  • You want every number editable for forecasting / board prep
  • You are nervous about Paddle's roadmap for the free metrics product
  • You prefer an independent vendor without a billing-migration agenda
  • You want flat €19-49/mo pricing with no hidden ramp
  • Stripe is your only payment processor

Stick with ProfitWell when

  • Free is the only price that works for you right now
  • You need automated dunning (Retain) and are happy to pay for it
  • You are open to migrating billing to Paddle eventually
  • You do not need to edit or pivot the data, dashboards are enough

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ProfitWell really still free?

Yes, the metrics product is free at time of writing. Paddle acquired ProfitWell in 2022 and has kept it free, but the long-term strategy is to use it as a funnel into Paddle's Merchant of Record billing. Whether that changes the metrics tier in the future is impossible to predict.

Why pay €19/mo when ProfitWell is free?

Three reasons: data ownership (your numbers stay in your Google Sheet, not Paddle's database), editability (write your own formulas on any cell), and the Ghost Churn view that ranks failed charges by recoverability without requiring you to buy a separate retention product.

Does Sheetrev do automated dunning like Retain?

Not yet. Sheetrev surfaces failed charges ranked by urgency so you can email those customers manually or wire it into your own automation. Automated dunning is on the roadmap for late 2026.

Can I use both ProfitWell and Sheetrev?

Yes, both are read-only on Stripe so they do not conflict. Many founders run both during a trial period to compare numbers.
